Recently, I had the honor of meeting with Dr. Bruce Lipton at the Consciousness and Human Evolution Conference in San Diego. I have immense respect for Dr. Lipton, for his courage and the wisdom that he shares with humanity through his scientific work.
In 1967, Dr. Lipton’s research revealed that gene expression is controlled by the environment, including our thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and beliefs. At the time, his findings were rejected by his peers because they didn’t align with the dominant, fundable research models. When 23 years later, the scientific community officially recognized Dr. Lipton’s scientific idea under the term epigenetics (above the genes), Dr. Lipton had already resigned from his tenured position at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine because he could no longer teach the text books that he didn’t believe in their accuracy anymore. This decision opened new doors for him, he continued his independent research and in 1987 he joined Stanford University, School of Medicine as a Research Fellow to continue working on his ideas. Since then he has continued sharing his insights through his books and lectures, with those who are open to the idea that we, as humans, are not victims of our genes, rather we have the power to influence our genetic expression. Today, Dr. Lipton is known as a pioneer in the field of epigenetics, which empowers us as humans to take control of our life destiny, regardless of our genetic inheritance.
What I find most inspiring about Dr. Lipton is his strong commitment to “his truth”, even when it was unpopular and rejected by the scientific community. He didn’t conform to the conventional belief system of his time just to fit in. He didn’t go with the flow for the sake of a comfortable life. He honored his discoveries, kept researching and learning more, wrote books, and continued speaking about it, regardless of how his ideas were received. Some may still disagree with his theories; some may still label him and his work; none of that impacts Dr. Lipton, and this is Dr. Lipton’s greatest strength: staying true to “his truth” and refusing to let external pressures or disapproval distract him from “his truth”.
I believe this tenacity and courage is a common quality among those who make lasting positive impacts on the world, people who remain loyal to their truth, in any form, shape or container, regardless of how they are perceived by others. They ignore the labels, focus their attention on what matters, and as Dr. Lipton says, they leave the system that is not true to them anymore and create new ones.
